I have enrolled a Mechanical Engineering PhD, since December 2006
My work was focused on the fracture mechanics of adhesive joints in mixed mode I + II, by:
- Assessing the state of the art for adhesive joint fracture mechanics tests
- Reproduce the most representative tests in order to gather data to help in the design process
- Design and improve a testing apparatus to obtain the full envelope of fracture in mixed mode I + II
Who am I
Since my early years at school I wanted to become a Mechanical Engineer. This came true when I finished my degree at FEUP in 2002, after which I have studied Industrial Design and obtained a Master Degree in 2006 from FEUP and ESAD (Matosinhos). Since then, I have been a PhD candidate at FEUP in collaboration with Virginia Tech and a researcher at IDMEC. I have also had the opportunity to enroll an Entrepreneurial course at Oporto Business School (previously known as EGP) giving me some insights about business and management.
I have choosen an arts course and I was involved in severall exhibitions, mostly managing and I was also editor of a magazine called "D'artes" at Augusto Gomes High School in Matosinhos. After finishing the Entrepreneurial course I had the opportunity to establish my own business (Forcan Industries, Lda) designing and supplying metal packaging machines. In 2009 I have sold my shares in this company. Since then I am teaching at IPCA (Instituto Politécnico do Cávado e do Ave) in Barcelos

About My Works
Fracture Mechanics applied to adhesive joints
Fracture mechanics can be used to characterize adhesive joint mechanical behavior and thus help to improve the joint design and ultimately optimize solutions using adhesive bonding technology. This is one of my research interests that I have pursuit in the latest years.
Design is an elegant way to solve problems and obtain functional and aesthetic oriented solutions. Having majored in Machine Design I have also obtained a Master Degree in Industrial Design and had the privilege to teach at Design courses. My latest design is a patented apparatus for fracture mechanics testing. Apparatus website

I am currently interested in Business Design research to help management and lead innovation. My early years business experience was consolidated with the entrepreneurship course at EGP, which launched me in my first ownership of an industrial design and management company FORCAN industries, Lda. There is nothing like ending your day running by the seaside. Raining or with sunshine my running shoes are always ready for some kilometers. I just love running in my hometown.
Cycling with a Downhill bike is always awesome because there is no obstacle to stop you. The only thing keeping me from getting anywhere is fatigue or breathlessness. And when it fails, it hurts like hell!
Surf is my new challenge, but an old passion. I share an immense thirst for the sea with most of the creatures that came from the sea, which in Darwin’s terms means : “ALMOST EVERY LIVING THING !”
I have majored in mechanical engineering at FEUP (Engineering Faculty of Porto University) specializing in Machine Design with an experimental laminator for PVC testing. My interest in Design evolved into a Master Degree in Industrial Design at FEUP and ESAD (Matosinhos). My master thesis was done on the study of adhesive application in bonding PVC window frames. To acquire management and entrepreneurial skills, I have enrolled the second edition of Entrepreneurship Course at Oporto Business School (former EGP) developing a Business Plan for a construction company specialized in refurbishing.
Later I took the opportunity to develop a PhD in Mechanical Engineering at FEUP in collaboration with Virginia Tech, allowing me to travel to the U.S.A. and work with a state of the art adhesives laboratory doing my research in fracture mechanics applied to the design of adhesive joint bonding.
I am specialized in structural simulation with cohesive elements in ABAQUS and also Solidworks Simulation, process manufacturing and design and can also work with Catia V15 and Autodesk Inventor.
I have always been very proactive trying to improve my work capabilities. While in Augusto Gomes High School I have promoted and managed several art exhibitions and I was also editor of an art magazine - D'Artes. This was a way to make the best of Art classes paintings.
During my school holidays I used to work in a windows frame company - Deacfil PVC Caixilharia, Lda. I have started from cleaning the floor to working with the machines in production, then worked in logistics, budgeting, developed catalogues and technical solutions and lastly helped my father in management.
After the Entrepreneurship course at Oporto Business School I have open a project design and management company - Forcan Industries, Lda - in order to design and supply a metal packaging production line for the second big metal packaging manufacturer in Iberia Peninsula. After finishing this work in 2009 I have sold my shares. From 2009 I have been lecturing at IPCA (Polytechnic Institute of Cavado and Ave) in Barcelos as an invited teacher.
